Emerita Professor of Law at Cardiff University, and Chair of Powys Teaching Health Board
Vivienne Harpwood is Emerita Professor of Law at Cardiff University where she held a post for many years as Professor of Medical Law and Ethics, having established the first of its kind Masters’ degree in Healthcare Law and Ethics entitled LLM (Legal Aspects of Medical Practice). Previously practising as a barrister, Vivienne is currently the Chair of Powys Teaching Health Board, chairs the Welsh NHS Confederation and is a trustee of the central NHS Confederation. Through her Education Department role within the international program of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics, she’s been a panel member dealing with ethical and legal issues arising during the COVID-19 pandemic. Professor Harpwood has been a member of international ethics panels for clinical trials, and her research has included reviews of clinical negligence litigation, consent to medical treatment, an investigation into the regulation of healthcare professions, ethical issues at the beginning and end of life, and legal issues in obstetrics.
