Omer Karim is a consultant urologist who has worked nearly 40 years in the NHS. After 20 years as a consultant, he was a whistleblower and was reported under false pretenses to the GMC where he underwent a 3 ½ year FTP investigation, which found his practice was not impaired. In 2021, he was the first doctor to successfully sue the General Medical Council for racial discrimination. The GMC appealed the verdict and were granted leave to appeal the judgement in the Employment Appeal Tribunal in 2023. With support of the BMA, he is taking his case to the Court of Appeal. He has experienced direct bullying from NHS senior to management and was effectively blackmailed into signing a settlement agreement not to raise a case against his NHS trust for detriment as a whistleblower. He is on the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the British Medical Association., although the GMC has since appealed the ET judgement.
