Consultant Trauma and Vascular Surgeon, Barts Health NHS Trust, and UK Defence Medical Service
Colonel Nigel Tai qualified as a doctor from University College London in 1991 and undertook surgical training in London, Essex and South Africa. He was appointed to the Royal London Hospital as Consultant in Trauma & Vascular Surgery in 2005 prior to commissioning in the Regular Army in 2006 and deploying to Afghanistan as surgeon to 3 PARA Battlegroup. He has deployed on multiple occasions since then to cuntries such as Iraq, Afghanistan and South Sudan. He helped establish the RLH Major Trauma Service and was Director of Trauma from 2012-2016; served as Director of the Definitive Surgery and Trauma Skills course and Tutor in Trauma & Emergency Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons, Senior Lecturer in the Academic Department of Military Surgery and Trauma at the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine and Clinical Director of 16 Medical Regiment, 16 Air Assault Brigade. For the past 3 years Nigel has headed jHubMed - the UK Defence Medical Services innovation hub. He has helped implement multiple clinical innovations ranging from Right Turn Resuscitation though to REBOA, has helped teams delivering digital applications assisting trauma rehabilitation, and leads a group at QMUL researching AI for battlefield clinical decision support.
