First-of-its-kind circumcision surgical technique demonstrated at Future Surgery 2022

First-of-its-kind circumcision surgical technique demonstrated at Future Surgery 2022
A pioneering surgical technique for male medical circumcision that avoids cauterisation and reduces surgical time by 80% will be demonstrated for the first time at Future Surgery.

CircCurer™ is an innovative circumcision device that uses a simultaneous circular cutter with a staple mechanism, similar to an anastomotic bowel stapler.

The novel approach is a step change for urologists reducing surgery times to a 5 minute procedure instead of 30 minutes, which is the current standard in the UK.

The technique is also ideal to be used with local anaesthetic, removing the cost and risks associated with general anaesthesia.

The procedure offers patients a precise ‘machine’ incision giving optimum cosmetic result and doesn’t involve cauterisation meaning quicker healing and reduced need for post-surgery painkillers.

A simulation using the novel CircCurer™ device and technique will be performed on the Association for British HealthTech Industries’ (ABHI) state-of-the-art Surgical Simulation Theatre, led by Consultant Urological Surgeon Matthew Liew at the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust.

Performing the simulation for the first time at Future Surgery, Matthew said: “Circumcision comprises of the largest UK urology waiting list burden. The COVID-19 backlog has highlighted the need for theatre efficiency, including more operations converted to local anaesthetic.

“CircCurer™ has the potential to offer efficient surgery and improved cosmesis and has just been involved in the first reported UK pilot study with the findings being presented to the British Association of Urological Surgeons. I’m delighted to be able to highlight the technology and this change in surgery techniques at Future Surgery 2022.”

Future Surgery 2022 takes place 15th and 16th November 2022 at ExCel, London.

Delivered in partnership with The Royal College of Surgeons of England, it will be the biggest gathering of surgical and operating theatre teams with over 100 exhibitors and 100+ speakers set to attend this year.

The show promises an action-packed programme with high-level training and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) accredited education delivered by leading academics and industry experts over two days.

Throughout the show, ABHI’s Surgical Simulation Theatre will be replicating a fully working operating theatre.

Paul Benton, Managing Director, International, at the ABHI added: “We are delighted to be showcasing this revolutionary new technique at Future of Surgery 2022. Our simulated surgical theatre is designed to celebrate collaborations between healthcare providers, clinicians and healthcare technology companies, allowing visitors to watch Britain’s best surgeons in action.”

The ground-breaking circumcision simulation will take place on day 1 of the exhibition (Tuesday 15 November, 14:00 – 15:00).
