"A Road Map to Democratisation of Surgery"
A Universal Truth: No Health Without a Workforce. We are unlikely to meet the targets required for delivery of safe surgical care as described in The Lancet Commissions report and WHO data on World shortage of health-care workers.
Surgical training has not changed in over 100 years. To fast-track education and to meet the global demand, I propose a road map for democratisation of surgery using a model of a "Virtual Surgical College". The students impress through their skills, curiosity, ingenuity, and passion. We change the way we select-educate-assess, learning-by-doing over lectures, and learning-by-results over exams, using a new technology enhanced learning curriculum to meet the surgical demands of the 21st century. Competency based multimedia learning to include digital surgery, virtual reality, and augmented reality that takes place locally breaking the barriers of space-time-distance and cost.

Speakers
Bijendra Patel, Consultant Upper GI & Laparoscopic Surgeon - Queen Mary University of London and Barts Health NHS Trust

Andrew Reed, Chief Executive of the Royal College of Surgeons of England
  • “Driven by changes in digital technologies and our fast-evolving understanding of genomics, innovations are expected to affect how we undertake surgery, and how we train surgeons in future.”
